Paliam Nalukettu and Kovilakam

Paliam Nalukettu and Kovilakam

Paliam Nalukettu and Kovilakam

A remnant of the matrilineal joint family system that was prevalent in Kerala, the Paliam Nalukettu is the ancestral house of the Paliyath family.

Striking for their austere style, the Paliam Nalukettu and Kovilakam remain timeless masterpieces that continue to attract visitors to Chendamangalam in North Paravur, Ernakulam for a small entrance fee. One a magnificent settlement which included the Paliyam Kovilakam, Nalukettu, Brahmana Madham, Puthiya Malika, Padippura Malika, Bhagavathithara and its ponds, it stands today as a reminder of the independent dynasty that ruled the state.

The Nalukettu, constructed under the instruction of Paliathachan - chief minister to the Maharaja of Kochi, for the women and children in the matrilineal family, provides insight into the lifestyle of its inhabitants. The Kovilakom was gifted to the Paliathachan by the Dutch for defeating the Portuguese. It is reflected in its construction style. The kovilakom houses numerous cultural and religious artefacts. Historical documents, relics, and daily objects of use such as the varpu - a large, shallow bronze vessel used to prepare food for large numbers of people on special occasions, can also be viewed here.
