Bird sanctuaries are vital assets that are crucial not just to the survival of birds, but to preserve the flora and fauna that is so very important to mankind as well. That is why Kerala has considered it important to preserve bird sanctuaries with a view to conserve it for the sake of the current and future generations. Ernakulam district too is home to a beautiful bird sanctuary, which is also one of the most sought-after in Kerala – Thattekad Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
It was Dr. Salim Ali, the world-famous ornithologist who identified that the area is affluent in bird diversity and should be preserved as a bird sanctuary. His extensive surveys during the 1930s is what led to the creation of this sanctuary and thus is named after him. Over 300 species of birds have been identified in the area. Some of these include Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Racket Tailed Drongo, Bronzed Drongo, White-bellied Treepie, Shama, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Rufous Babbler, Malabar Parakeet, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher and the Malabar Grey Hornbill. Thattekad is an amazingly alluring forest range with over 28 species of mammals and 9 species of reptiles. The flora too is simply stunning and all these make Thattekad Bird Sanctuary a paradise for nature enthusiasts.
